Astera Health Centennial

For 100 years, Astera Health has been a trusted partner,
offering compassionate care and support to our community. We’ve overcome challenges with resilience and determination.

Our History

On January 30, 1925, Wesley Memorial Hospital opened its doors, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey in healthcare. Led by Helen Jackson, RN, as the first superintendent, the hospital quickly became a cornerstone of the community. Over the decades, visionary leaders like Lydia Keller, RN, Arnold Lind, Earl Schillo, John Studsrud, James Lawson, Dennis Miley, and now Joel Beiswenger, have carried the torch, shaping Astera Health into what it is today.

Wesley Memorial began as a 50-bed hospital. By 1974, growth demanded a new facility, and Tri-County Hospital (TCH) was born. Through the years, the hospital evolved, undergoing renovations and expansions to meet the changing needs of the community.

In 2008, TCH joined with Wadena Medical Center, forming Tri-County Health Care, bringing in clinics from Bertha, Henning, Ottertail, and Sebeka. It also included Fair Oaks Lodge, EMS services, and home healthcare and hospice programs. This integration was a turning point, laying the groundwork for an even brighter future.

Healthcare is defined by change, and Astera Health has embraced it. In 2019, our campaign to build a state-of-the-art campus on Highway 10 marked a new chapter. With the unveiling of the Astera Health name and the opening of a new campus, we entered a new era of innovation and commitment to our patients. Through it all, countless staff, providers, and patients have walked these halls, leaving their mark on this storied institution.

As we celebrate 100 years of service, we reflect on the legacy of care that has defined us and look forward to building the next century together. Join us throughout 2025 as we honor this milestone with events, stories, and celebrations that pay tribute to the people and moments that have shaped Astera Health.

Healthy Times Centennial Edition

To commemorate the special milestone, Astera Health published and distributed a special edition of its magazine, Healthy Times. In this commemorative edition, the centennial is honored by memories of past achievements across the organization’s history. Readers will find lots of information from the opening of the Wesley hospital in 1925, to the opening of the Tri-County Hospital in 1974, to the six communities where rural health clinics have opened.
