Sports Medicine
What Is Sports Medicine?
Sports medicine helps athletes prevent and treat injuries related to sports. Our sports medicine care team consists of Stephen Davis, MD; Sarah Maninga and Nathan Fry, certified athletic trainers, Brock Spandl, DC; and our medical staff.
Athletic trainers are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

Athletic Training Programs
Designed as a high-intensity training program for both male and female athletes to enhance functional athletic training. Pre and post-testing are done to determine the athletes’ individual baseline, which allows the athlete to work toward their goals and see improvements. The program incorporates speed, agility, power, functional strength, plyometrics, stabilization, core strengthening, and wellness education. This training is a great way for athletes to maintain their functional athletic training abilities throughout the entire year.
Educational Presentations
Our professional staff enjoys educating patients on various medical issues at community events, including Athletes’ Nite Out at local high schools, Health Fairs, and any other organizations interested in contacting the department.
High School Outreach
Medical services are provided to surrounding area high schools by a certified athletic trainer (ATC). After-school practices, home games, and tournament game coverage is provided. Athletes are able to receive a full evaluation by the ATC, proper rehabilitation exercises, stretching, therapeutic modality use (i.e. ice, heat, etc.), functional bracing and taping, proper weight lifting, and performance of sport-specific activities. When necessary, a referral to other medical professionals will be given by the ATC to ensure quality care.
Sports Injury Evaluations
Elementary, junior, and senior high athletes can receive a complimentary sports injury evaluation by an Astera medical provider. These evaluations are available at our Wadena Clinic, Monday – Friday, from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m., and also at our Henning Clinic, Monday – Friday, at any time during the day. If additional care, tests, or services are required after the initial evaluation, fees for services will be charged at that time.
Strength & Conditioning Programs
Individual strength and conditioning programs are available for people of all ages. Programs focus on each individual’s goals and interests to establish a program they will benefit from. Progression will occur as the person is ready to ensure that they continue to see improvements and enhance their overall body strength.
