Options tailored to your need

Every patient has different needs. That’s why the Astera general surgery team offers a range of surgical options.

Traditional open surgery

When appropriate, patients undergo traditional surgery, also known as open surgery, which involves a single large incision to provide the surgeon with a clear view of the surgical site. Results from traditional surgery are generally excellent

Minimally invasive surgery

Advances in recent decades have allowed for less invasive general surgery. At Astera, our surgeons opt for minimally invasive techniques whenever possible. These techniques have the same outcomes as traditional surgery with additional benefits.

Compared to traditional surgery, minimally invasive surgery typically results in:

  • Faster recovery
  • Reduced pain
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Smaller scars

Minimally invasive surgery takes place through a series of small incisions. The surgeon guides a thin, flexible tube to the surgical site. A camera on the end of the catheter acts as the surgeon’s eyes. The surgeon then inserts tiny tools through the other incisions and performs the surgery while watching real-time video from the inserted camera.

Along with general surgery, other Astera specialists use minimally invasive surgeries to improve their patients’ surgical experience. Other experts who offer minimally invasive surgery include:

  • Ear, nose, and throat specialists treat balance issues, throat disorders, sinusitis, and more
  • Heart care surgeons correct heart and vascular issues
  • Orthopedic surgeons help heal bones and joints using advanced techniques, such as arthroscopy and robotic-assisted joint replacement
