Understanding Heart Attack Symptoms
A heart attack can happen suddenly, and knowing the warning signs can save a life. The most common symptom is chest discomfort. This often feels like pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain in the center of the chest. The discomfort may last more than a few minutes or go away and come back.
Other Warning Signs to Watch For
Heart attack symptoms don’t always stop at the chest. Some people feel pain or discomfort in other areas of the upper body, such as one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach. Shortness of breath may also occur, with or without chest pain. Other possible signs include breaking out in a cold sweat, feeling nauseous, or becoming lightheaded. If you or someone near you experiences these symptoms, seek medical help right away.
Protecting Your Heart with Healthy Habits
The good news is that healthy habits are one of the best ways to protect your heart. You can lower your risk of heart disease by not smoking, staying active, eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and maintaining a healthy weight. It’s also important to work with your health care provider to keep your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar at healthy levels. Small steps today can make a big difference for your heart tomorrow.
