Hormone Replacement Therapy: What You Need to Know

By Dr. Hala Madi, OB/GYN

As an OB/GYN, I talk with many women who are confused or worried about hormone replacement therapy, often called HRT. You may have heard scary stories, mixed messages, or advice that just doesn’t make sense. Let’s clear things up.

My goal is simple: help you understand what HRT is, what it does, and what is true and not true about it.

What Is Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Hormone replacement therapy is a treatment that helps replace hormones your body no longer makes in the same amount.

As women get older, especially during menopause, levels of hormones like estrogen and progesterone drop. This change can cause uncomfortable symptoms.

HRT gives your body some of those hormones back, usually through pills, patches, creams or gels, or vaginal tablets or rings.

There is no one-size-fits-all option. What works best depends on your body and your symptoms.

What Does HRT Help With?

Hormones affect many parts of the body. When levels drop, you may notice hot flashes, night sweats, trouble sleeping, mood changes, vaginal dryness, low energy, brain fog, or bone loss.

HRT can help reduce or relieve many of these symptoms. For some women, it can be life-changing.

Common Myths About HRT

Myth: HRT is unsafe for everyone. Fact: HRT is safe for many women when used correctly.

Is HRT Right for You?

HRT is not for everyone, and that’s okay. The most important step is having an open conversation with your OB/GYN about your symptoms, health history, and goals.
