Sports Medicine
Sports medicine specialists at Astera Health help Central Minnesota athletes stay on the field. Our sports medicine team members provide diagnosis and treatment of common injuries. They also help speed recovery from injuries and prevent future injuries.
Sports Medicine at Astera Health
Sports medicine professionals at Astera include:
- Certified athletic trainers. As highly qualified and multi-skilled healthcare professionals, athletic trainers (ATs) offer a wide range of services to their patients. Working under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, ATs can oversee preventive care, diagnose orthopedic conditions, treat sports injuries, and provide rehabilitation services. They work closely with other healthcare providers to ensure the best outcomes for their patients and are an essential part of the healthcare team.
- Chiropractors. A chiropractor is a healthcare professional specializing in diagnosing and treating neuromuscular disorders through manual adjustment and manipulation of the spine and other musculoskeletal structures, often focusing on improving alignment to alleviate pain and enhance overall well-being. Our chiropractors have special training in sports medicine. They use this training to help bring health and healing to hurting athletes.
- Orthopedic surgeons. An orthopedic surgeon specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and rehabilitation of disorders, injuries, and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. If a sports injury causes a break, tear, or other severe trauma that requires emergency medicine, surgery may be necessary.

Services
Sports Physicals
We offer sports physicals at a pre-discounted rate of $85. You may schedule your appointment at any of our clinic locations.
Injury evaluation
Don’t rush to the emergency department when your young athlete experiences a sports-related injury. Head to Astera’s Wadena Clinic.
There, an Astera sports medicine provider will evaluate your athlete’s injury at no cost. If you need diagnostic imaging or additional tests, treatment, or care, Astera accepts most insurance providers.
Sports-related injury evaluation is available for athletes in elementary, middle, or high school. This service is offered Monday through Friday, 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.
School-based sports medicine services
To protect young athletes, Astera provides sports medicine care for local high schools. During after-school practices, home games, and tournament play, an Astera athletic trainer is on-site.
Even before an athletic injury occurs, our trainers are active. They monitor athletes as they move, providing insight and care to protect their bones, muscles, and joints.
Services our on-site athletic trainers provide include:
- Educating on proper weight-lifting techniques and tips to remain safe during physical fitness and activity
- Evaluating ankle sprains, strained muscles, and other major and minor sports injuries
- Treating minor injuries on school grounds using ice or heat, functional bracing, and taping, or other treatment options
When an injury requires more specialized care, the athletic trainer stabilizes the injury and refers the athlete to the appropriate specialist. Because our trainers are part of Astera, this referral process is seamless.
