Background
I was a partner at Northern Orthopedics in Brainerd for 12 years. While there, I provided outreach in Wadena for 11 years. I have been married to my wife, Becky, for more than 20 years. We have three children: Nole, Cally, and Owen. We also have a golden retriever named Izzy.
What inspired you to get into medicine?
Both of my parents were involved in health care, so I was exposed to it early on. I was interested in the science behind everything and in the ability of physicians to have such a positive impact on patients’ lives.
What do you enjoy most about working in the medical field?
I enjoy the challenge of Orthopedic Surgery and being able to identify a problem, or improve that problem through both non-surgical and surgical treatments. More importantly, I enjoy the patient interaction. I love being able to explain to patients the treatments involved, and being able to see patients back after they have recovered or improved following their injury or treatment.
What is your favorite part about working at Astera Health?
I really enjoy the team atmosphere. At a time when many larger health care hospitals are becoming very corporate and distant, Astera Health works as a team and puts the patient first. It is a privilege to be able to work in this type of health care environment.
What can your patients expect when they come in for an appointment?
I will always do my very best to treat each patient as I would want to be treated -- with respect and honesty. It means that I continue to educate myself and stay up to date with the best treatment alternatives for all kinds of musculoskeletal pain and injuries. I want to be able to treat each patient individually and help them choose the best treatment option.
What do you like to do in your downtime?
I have 3 teenage children and spend a lot of time with them. I love watching movies with my wife and kids. I also enjoy mountain biking, road biking, exercising at the Maslowski Wellness and Research Center, water skiing, downhill skiing and cross-country skiing. I read lots of books -- both fiction and non-fiction.
What is one interesting, unique or fun thing that most people may not know about you?
I spent six months living in Oslo while I completed my sports fellowship. I went with Becky and Nole and Cally (who were 3 and 1 at the time). It was an incredible experience. Also, my favorite food is Eggo waffles!
