A vasectomy is a popular and effective procedure for men who are sure they don’t want to have children. As a long-term birth control method, it’s safe, minimally invasive, and doesn’t affect overall health. In this guide, we’ll explain what a vasectomy is, how it works, and why it might be the right choice for you. Like with any surgical procedure, please discuss it with your Astera Health provider.

What is a Vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a quick outpatient procedure that prevents sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation. It works by cutting or blocking the vas deferens. The vas deferens are the tubes that transport sperm from the testicles. This procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia and takes about an hour to complete. Most men experience slight discomfort and can return to normal activities within a few days.

Why Choose a Vasectomy?

If you’re looking for a permanent birth control option, a vasectomy has many advantages:

  • Highly Effective: Vasectomies have a success rate of over 99%, making them one of the most reliable contraception methods.
  • Convenient: Unlike condoms or pills, a vasectomy doesn’t require daily attention or preparation before intimacy.
  • Cost-Effective: Over time, it costs less than other birth control methods.
  • Safe and Quick Recovery: Most men recover within a few days and can resume normal activities without significant downtime.

Does a Vasectomy Affect Sexual Performance?

A vasectomy does not impact testosterone levels, libido, or the ability to have an erection. You’ll still ejaculate as usual, but your semen will no longer contain sperm.

What to Expect After a Vasectomy

It’s important to know that a vasectomy doesn’t work immediately. Sperm can remain in the vas deferens for several weeks after the procedure. Until a follow-up semen analysis confirms the absence of sperm, you’ll need to use another form of contraception.

Is a Vasectomy Right for You?

This simple procedure is ideal for men who are certain they don’t want more children. Be sure to discuss it thoroughly with your partner and consult your doctor to ensure it aligns with your family planning goals. By understanding the facts, benefits, and recovery process, you can make an informed choice about this reliable form of male contraception.

of time to make sure no other conditions can affect the procedure. It typically takes about an hour to complete and is done in the clinic procedure room. I use a local anesthetic similar to what is used in the dental office. This is usually all that is needed for the procedure and the numbing effects will last for a few hours after they return home. You will need a driver after the procedure and supportive underwear. Make sure to have plenty of ice available afterward. Usually people do not need any medication ahead of time.

A man will need to take about 3-4 days off before returning to normal activity. It may take a few extra days if they are doing heavy lifting. The first 36 hours mostly consist of sitting and icing and using over-the-counter pain medication.  After this, a man can gradually increase activity as tolerated.  Following instructions is very important and will strongly dictate having a good outcome and easier recovery.
